Stay a few days on arrival in Addis. Sure, you’ll read elsewhere to hop in and out of the traffic-clogged hub, but I recommend getting your sea-legs there. Hotels in Addis are the most comfortable in the country, the possibilities for urban exploration are as impressive as they are broad, and you won’t feel so pressured to see all of the highlights in a “day tour” where you’ll instead find most of your day spent sitting in traffic. Flights arrive early in the morning on Ethiopian Airlines, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel to rest and refresh immediately. After lunch at your hotel, I recommend a visit to the spa. One of my favorite spas is in the Radisson Blu Addis and it merges Ethiopian wellness traditions with modern treatments...is there a better way to recover from jetlag? When you are feeling rejuvenated, head out to your welcome dinner. The next day, visit a women’s textile co-op, learn to make injera, explore the Merkato - one Africa’s largest markets, or seek out the best (and most historic) coffee shop in Addis. Talk about possibilities!
