Ethiopia is a fairly challenging destination to explore without children, adding kids to the mix can certainly change things up! That said, I’ve noticed many, many families (mostly Americans with adopted Ethiopian children) traveling in Ethiopia. I would take my son - he’d love it. Ancient castles to explore, underground tunnels and churches, tuk-tuks (he loves a tuk-tuk ride more than anyone I know) and a lake the color of hot chocolate to swim in. Most hotels can accommodate triples although some rooms are very small and lack privacy. Bathrooms are simple and bathtubs are extremely rare - even if they exist there is probably not enough water (or pressure) to fill it. Ethiopians are incredibly friendly, welcoming people and children (Ethiopian and farenji alike) are welcome in historical sites as long as they are relatively well-behaved and respectful. A couple of the lodges down on Lake Langano are ideal for families with kids, and the lake is safe for swimming (it is bilharzia-free!). Experiencing Ethiopia with your children (younger than teens) should only be considered for the most well-traveled families. The easiest thing about traveling with kids in Ethiopia? Thanks to the Italian influence, there’s always pasta on the menu!
