While Amani doesn’t advocate the ticking-off of lists, Kenya is a great place to search for the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Lyndsay recommends starting off at the Emakoko in Nairobi National Park for rhino, then heading to Laikipia for more rhino at Lewa Conservancy or to Borana, you’ll get a fair share of elephant there, too. In the Mara you can watch the drama of the big cats - lions and leopards - and no doubt some massive old Cape buffalo will be scattered throughout. Amboseli National Park is picturesque and an ideal spot for viewing massive herds of elephants, plus you can incorporate a visit to the Cynthia Moss Elephant Research Center here, or head North to Samburu and Elephant Watch Camp. Kenya also has another “five” - the Northern Species: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and the gerenuk.
